Split is the largest city in Dalmatia and the second-largest city in Croatia. Besides the figures showing its population and the area Split covers, this historic city can boast a large number of historic buildings and monuments, as well as beautifully arranged areas where the people of Split love to relax, just as visitors who come to see us do.
Besides being the second-largest city in Croatia, Split is Croatia's second-largest port and the third port in the Mediterranean by number of passengers. It is the administrative centre of Split-Dalmatia County and draws in the area of the three southernmost Croatian counties, as well as part of Herzegovina, and even Bosnia.

In the port of Lora, on the northern side of the peninsula, lies the headquarters of the Croatian Navy. The city centre is formed by the ancient Diocletian's Palace from the 4th century (which has been under UNESCO protection since 1979), a unique example in the world.

Get to know the Split Riva

Split's Riva took on its present form at the beginning of the 19th century. During this period Split was ruled by the French, to whom we can credit most of the merit for its simply enchanting appearance. About a hundred years later, native plant species were replaced by palm trees, and another great change came just before the end of the 20th century, when the Riva was finally closed to traffic.

A renovation was nonetheless necessary, and it did take place, in 2007, since when the Riva has once again been shining with its beauty and charming every passer-by, whether locals or tourists touring beautiful Split.

During the renovation, that is, the works that were carried out, archaeological research was also conducted in the area of the Riva. An interesting detail was discovered – that the first Split riva dates back to the 1st century BCE, although the first town promenade was built in the time of Diocletian.

Split Riva – cafés and restaurants

Today Split's Riva is a special place for pleasant walks, resting on benches with a sea view, or refreshment at one of the nearby cafés or restaurants. The place is very lively and simply invites you to come. If you decide to visit Split, this Riva is a place you simply must see.

Today the Riva is the city's main promenade. It is a place where friends and families gather and where people spend their free time. On their Riva, the people of Split also know how to organise big events, among which we should certainly mention the welcome for Goran Ivanišević on 10 July 2001 after he won Wimbledon, and the Freedom Train in 1995, on the occasion of the liberation of Croatian territory from Greater-Serbian occupation. If you are looking for food and cafés on the Split Riva, you are in the right place. Cafés line the whole promenade, and there is no shortage of restaurants either. However, a larger number of restaurants are located further back, if you walk a few hundred metres from the riva. They are also cheaper in price than those located right on the riva itself.

New Year's celebrations in Split are specially organised at this very place. Besides summer guests, Split is a city that someone is always coming to. For New Year's Eve the city is specially decorated and a special programme is organised. Guests from all over the world have recognised this, so many of them come with the specific intention of seeing in the New Year in Split.

Besides the beauties mentioned above, people will come to the promenade to enjoy the interesting and above all rich architecture that surrounds the Riva. It is around 250 metres long, and almost its entire western side is bordered by the walls and other parts of the Franciscan monastery of St Francis, the Dešković Palace and the Prokurative, while at the south-eastern end it is 'overseen' by the building of the Port Authority.

Between Diocletian's Palace at the northern end of the Riva and the sea there is a row of palm trees. This is a place particularly suited for resting and catching a little shade on hot days.
