Telašćica Nature Park is an area rich in diversity, or perhaps we should say contrasts. It is located on an island (Dugi Otok), so on one side we have the part of the park that we could describe as a calm and quiet coastal area with beautiful beaches, while the other side of the park (and of the island itself) is characterised by wild, steep cliffs and rocks that at first seem inaccessible and hard to conquer.

It is interesting to mention that the largest and safest natural harbour in the Adriatic is located on the south-eastern part of Dugi Otok.

Telašćica Nature Park – Dugi Otok

The nature park was declared in 1988, thanks to its exceptionally valuable plant and animal life. In addition, the park is rich in geological phenomena and interesting geological sites.

One side of the Park is adorned with forests of Aleppo pine and holm oak, while the other side is characterised by bare, rocky terrain.

What can you see in the park?

The natural surroundings will enchant everyone who visits Telašćica Nature Park. Still, we can single out three phenomena that every visitor must see: the unique Telašćica cove, the cliffs of Dugi Otok, and the salt lake Mir.

The Telašćica cove hides as many as 25 small beaches, which will be an ideal place to relax during the hot summer days. The island's cliffs (the rock faces) rise more than 160 metres above the sea surface, and descend as much as 90 metres below the sea surface. Besides their beauty and their testament to the power and might of nature, these rocks are rich in interesting plant and animal life. Right at the very boundary where the sea touches the rocks, a rich underwater world of animals, corals and plants appears.

Lake Mir is located in a narrow strip of land, between the Telašćica bay and the open sea. It is believed that the lake formed after the last ice age. The lake is interesting because it contains salt water, since the sea filled this depression after the rise in sea level (following the last ice age). Even today, salt water seeps into the lake through tiny cracks in the rocks that surround it.

The lake is 900 metres long, and its measured width (at its widest point) is 300 metres. The depth of Lake Mir on Dugi Otok is up to 6 metres. We have already mentioned that the lake is salty, and its salinity is higher than that of the surrounding sea because of its enclosed nature. Due to the high salinity, the lake is not rich in fish. In fact, only a few species of marine organisms live in the lake, as well as plankton.

It is interesting to visit the small church of St Anthony, which dates back to the earliest Christian times. This old church served its purpose until 1844, when it was plundered by the outlaw Kutleša. Many years later, only in 1913, the villagers had a new church built on the remains of the plundered church, in which Mass is still held today on the feast day of St Anthony of Padua.

Besides the aforementioned church, on the Citorij hill there is another church – the church of St Victor. This church was built on the gentle southern slope of the plateau, at an altitude of 92 metres.

What does Telašćica Nature Park offer its guests?

If you have visited the park, you have various activities at your disposal, from cruising, various sports, to many activities in and on the water. You can dive, fish, or simply swim in one of the coves. If water activities are not for you, a walk through the park may be just what you are looking for, or perhaps a pleasant bike ride.

In the park, it is possible to dive at several attractive spots near the cliffs. Park visitors, with a bit of luck, can enjoy the sight of a family of dolphins that regularly visits the waters.

The land part of the park is rich in plant and animal species. It is important to mention that some endemic species also live here, so this is an ideal opportunity to see some of them. Among the plants in the park, we find 4 endemic species: the Telašćica stonecrop, the Dubrovnik hare's-ear, the white Silene and the Dalmatian pyrethrum. These plants are strictly protected, and the island also has another 59 plant species that are protected by law.

Some animal species are also endemic, namely two species of snails: the Dugi Otok door snail Delima edmibrani and Agathylla lamellosa. These species of snails have so far been found only within the boundaries of Telašćica Nature Park. Besides the snails, the endemic species in the park also include two species of beetle. Among the aquatic species, the endemic ones include: the sea anemone, the noble pen shell, and stony and soft coral. Bird lovers can make the most of their visit by observing various bird species, among which the common buzzard, the little owl and the yellow-legged gull particularly stand out.

How to get to Telašćica Nature Park?

Telašćica Nature Park itself is best visited by boat. This is not surprising, given that most of the park consists of sea. If you do not own a boat, you can contact one of the many agencies that transport visitors every day, while boat owners can visit the park in a private arrangement.

Overnight stays near the park (on Dugi Otok)

Within the Park itself there are stone cottages where you can stay overnight. Besides the stone cottages on offer, you can also stay at a nearby hotel in the town of Sali. Anchoring and overnight stays in the coves within the park's area are also permitted, which means you can also spend the night on a rented boat.

In the Park there are several catering establishments where you can enjoy traditional fish and meat specialities. The establishments are located on the nearby island of Katina, and in the coves of Mala Proversa, Mir and Magrovica.

Telašćica Nature Park is part of Dugi Otok, and is situated in the central part of the Adriatic Sea. It was declared a nature park in 1988 because of its valuable plant and animal life, its unique relief, and the marine life near the island. The park's total area is only 70.5 square kilometres.

The main features of the nature park are Telašćica cove, which is the safest and largest natural harbour in the Adriatic Sea, and contains 25 small beaches and islets. Then there are the cliffs, which reach a height of 161 metres above and 90 metres below the sea, and Lake „Mir“, which has healing properties. The park is rich in plant species, of which there are around 500, and in the surrounding area there are also meadows, as well as forests of Aleppo pine and holm oak. Lake Mir, Telašćica

Mir is a salt lake located within Telašćica Nature Park on Dugi Otok. The lake was formed after the last ice age, when the sea level rose by approximately 120 metres, so the karst depression filled with sea water through numerous underground cracks. The lake's surface area is 0.23 km², its length is around 900 metres, and at its widest point the lake measures 300 metres. A special feature of the lake is the higher salinity of the water and greater temperature amplitude, so that in summer the water in the lake becomes extremely hot, while in winter it is colder than the open sea. The lake's shore is for the most part low and rocky, but in one part sand and healing mud can be found.
