The museum in Šibenik was founded on 20 December 1925, on the occasion of marking the thousandth anniversary of the Croatian kingdom. It is located near the cathedral, in the former Duke's Palace.
The Duke's Palace was once part of the town's coastal defence system. It was built in the period between the 13th and 14th centuries, and today serves a completely different purpose.

The Šibenik Town Museum is a museum of a complex type. It consists of an archaeological, a cultural-history and an ethnographic department. The museum is engaged in collecting, preserving, processing and presenting the cultural and historical heritage of this region. In its collections, the Šibenik museum keeps numerous objects of historical value, significant for studying Šibenik's past, from the earliest times to the present day.

The museum is certainly worth a visit

The museum's entire holdings are divided into the following collections: the archaeological department (with special focus on prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages and underwater history), the cultural-history department and the department of recent history (stone monuments, old masters, old prints, weapons, old photographs, postcards, archival material, a gallery collection, a collection of rare editions, archival material, cartography, numismatics, jewellery, furniture, ceramics, everyday objects, liturgical objects, musical instruments). The total number of museum items is around 150,000.

Recommendation: Šibenska katedrala. Solaris Šibenik

The museum has nevertheless achieved its greatest significance in research, exhibition and publishing activities. It can boast numerous explored archaeological sites in the area around Šibenik and in the Šibenik waters, as well as more than 300 organised exhibition catalogues. In addition, the Museum has published numerous editions of exceptional value for illuminating the past of the town of King Krešimir, the oldest Croatian town on the Adriatic.
