Arena Zagreb is the largest sports hall (arena) in Croatia. It was built in 2008 (when Croatia was the host) for the 21st World Men's Handball Championship.
Arena Zagreb became a new architectural symbol of the city, and a recognisable feature of the skyline in the part of the city where it is located. It is special for its beauty, but also for its functionality, and it has remained an important part of the city's culture.
It is a multi-purpose hall, with all possible supporting facilities. It is intended primarily for holding sporting events, but also for holding various cultural, business and entertainment events. Arena Zagreb is located in the western part of the city, right at the entrance to the Remetinec neighbourhood.
The capacity of the hall is 16.500 seats.
The Arena was designed by Alan Leo Pleština, Berislav Medić, Nenad Borgudan and Tamara Stančić Brčić. After all the permits had been obtained, construction work on the building began on 20 July 2007. The Arena was officially opened on 27 December 2008, with a friendly match between the handball national teams of Croatia and Russia. On that occasion, the Croatian national team won with a score of 33:24.
Indoor sports that can be held in the Arena include: handball, basketball, volleyball, futsal, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, badminton, boxing, wrestling, indoor athletics and other sports that can be played in a hall. Besides sporting events, Arena Zagreb also hosts concerts, exhibitions, fairs, conventions and congresses.
Within the Arena complex, many catering facilities and spaces for business and commercial use have been built and opened, as well as a small hall for athletes' training.
The Arena has an underground garage with capacity for 900 parking spaces. Besides the parking spaces in the underground garage, there are 80 above-ground parking spaces in front of the Arena. For larger crowds visiting the hall, bus transport is provided, with capacity for 36 parking spaces for buses.
