Nature lovers gladly visit the highest island peak on the Adriatic. If you have an adventurous spirit, are in good shape and love nature, set off along the trails of Vidova Gora on the island of Brač.
Vidova Gora is the highest peak of the island of Brač. In fact, this is the highest island mountain peak on the whole Adriatic. From Vidova Gora there is a magnificent view of Bol, the globally famous beach of Zlatni Rat, and of the island of Hvar.
Many visitors to the island, besides swimming and enjoying the beaches, like to head into nature and enjoy it in a special way. Adventurers and people who simply love nature will feel great on the trails of Vidova Gora. Besides nature, Vidova Gora also conceals some historical and cultural curiosities. Below we will mention all the interesting details of this hill on the island.
We have already written this, but let's start from the beginning – Vidova Gora is the highest peak on the Adriatic islands. The summit of this mountain is located at 778 metres above sea level. It got its name from the small church of St Vitus, which once stood on top of the hill. Unfortunately, today the church is just a ruin, but it is still a lovely place to visit. Not far from the ruined walls is the catering establishment "Vidova Gora", a place where you can refresh yourself, rest, and enjoy a beautiful view into the distance.
Among the ruined remains of the small church, traces of the northern wall and part of a semicircular apse can be seen. The small church of St Vitus was erected in the 13th or 14th century. Since ancient times, the people of Brač have linked this mountain, around which many fantastic tales have been woven, with the old Slavic god Svevid. This story is supported by many other places on the island that have an Old Slavic origin. Long before the Slavs arrived on the Adriatic, the Illyrian inhabitants had a fortified hill-settlement on top of Vidova Gora.
They defended themselves and their livestock from enemies with a dry-stone wall built in a circle. The remains of the former walls can still be seen in certain places. From the top of Vidova Gora there is a unique view towards the south. Today, right at the summit, there is a television transmitter and a small building with a tavern, stone tables and benches for resting.
On clear days, from Vidova Gora you can also see the other islands and Biokovo, from the Pelješac peninsula in the east, across Korčula, Vis and Biševo, all the way to the distant rock of Jabuka. When the weather is especially clear, without clouds, the peaks of the Apennine mountains can be seen from Vidova Gora. At the summit, a large stone cross was erected after the Croatian War of Independence. In winter, Vidova Gora is often covered in a blanket of snow. At such times, islanders use the snowy parts of the mountain as excursion spots.
The summit can be reached by personal vehicle, by road, or by specially marked hiking trails. If you want to climb the mountain, be sure to ask for a professional guide to give you instructions or to go with you.

Vidova Gora is a challenge for many climbers and adventurers. A truly large number of hikers pass along the trails of our mountain, both professionals and amateurs. Numerous hiking tours are a special tourist offer, which besides physical challenge also provides the chance to come into contact with the rich historical heritage of this island.
The tour will certainly be enriched by the interesting and varied landscape of Mediterranean maquis, black pine forest and karst terrain.
If you decide to take a walk through this mountain landscape, we suggest you visit some of the attractions of Vidova Gora.
One of the special locations on Vidova Gora is certainly the Brotun cave.
The neatly marked Vela trail was partly built back in Roman times. The trail once connected Bol and Nerežišća. On the slopes of Koštilo and in the caves below Baljenica, the large Brač birds of prey, the common buzzards, nest.
With their slow flight, these birds of prey proudly display a grandiose mastery of flight and hunting. Everyone who stops even briefly and glances towards them will experience the pleasure of watching them.
You can continue the journey along the very ridge towards the highest point of the island and the resting spot at the top. Resting on the large terrace of the establishment is a favourite of many recreational hikers, bikers, trekkers and, at times, paragliders or adrenaline-seekers who fly on kites.
To reach the largest cave on Brač, beneath Vidova Gora, you need to descend 120 metres in elevation. The descent takes place on the south-western side of the mountain, in a completely natural "wild" environment, so on this occasion we warn everyone to be careful and act responsibly.
On Vidova Gora there are still many things to see. One of the attractions, or more precisely natural phenomena, is Vičja Jama.
So far we know of 218 speleological features, of which 182 continue in a vertical direction from their opening. It is precisely such pits that set Brač apart as the most interesting island for speleology. In fact, many of them were only systematically explored in 1959, when equipment did not allow the exploration of pits deeper than 285 metres.
Vičja Jama stands out especially among them (the pit of the witch, the evil spirit), because according to local belief it is said to stretch underground all the way to Vičja Luka on the western coast of Brač, near Bobovišća on the sea. The entrance to this pit is located in a pine forest not far from the trail leading further towards Murvica or Blaca. If you plan to visit it, you will need a guide, because it is hard to spot and you will not be able to find it on your own. The large funnel-shaped opening inspires awe at first sight. As you approach and find yourself at the edge of the abyss, the feeling is intense and mixed.

For many, perhaps the most interesting thing is the goldfish that live on Brač. They do not live in the sea or in some home aquarium. In fact, near the village of Donji Humac, along the road, there are the Dunaj water catchments (the Nerežišća waters), built back in the time of the Austro-Hungarian state. Today they are "adorned" with living specimens of goldfish. This habitat suits these small aquatic creatures well, as best shown by the fact that they now live in colonies that have developed and been maintained very well over all these years.
Nearby is also the small Church of the Holy Trinity. It is surrounded by slender cypress trees, which on Brač are planted along the roads leading to the cemetery and around the cemetery and churches.
There is really still a great deal to see here, but we cannot mention it all in just one text. It would be best if you came and visited Brač. Get to know it, both along the coast and its hills and mountains. An apparently barren and rocky area, the island of Brač hides many attractions and things worth visiting.
On this occasion we invite you to come and enjoy this beautiful island in the Adriatic Sea.
