On the island of Brač you will find the mountain hut „Gažul“. It is situated in the wider area of Vidova Gora, the highest island mountain on the Adriatic. The house blends into the beautiful forest landscape, and for that reason it is gladly visited throughout the whole year.
The house has a kitchen and dishes, and in the attic there are 25 overnight places. You need your own sleeping bags, and next to the house there is an outdoor toilet, water from a water tank, and electricity from solar power.
Gažul is reached by car, via Nerežišća, and at the turn-off for Vidova Gora continue travelling east towards Bol.
The mountain hut today serves members of the HGSS (Croatian Mountain Rescue Service), Brač unit, for storing equipment needed for search and rescue operations, for gatherings, and for holding exercises and duty shifts.
It is located next to a small Brač shepherd settlement of stone cottages and livestock pens. Every year a livestock fair is held here, a special opportunity to try Brač lamb and the speciality „vitalac“.
Every year, now traditionally, the people of Brač prepare a fair marked by good company and even better food.
At the fair there are usually mostly sheep, which is only logical given that Brač is known worldwide for its famous lamb and its sheep's cheese production.
The livestock fair on Brač has become very popular and well regarded among guests and visitors. Many like to come to the fair to look at the breeds, while others like to taste the delicacies and the delicious meat from Brač.
Besides sheep, at the fair you can also see donkeys, foals, horses, mares and their foals. There are also mules, and more recently cows too. The fair is today a tourist attraction. Today the fair is very popular, and the clicking sound of cameras has become an integral part of the fair. Everyone wants to take home a piece of the atmosphere.
