Lovers of art, culture and history will certainly enjoy a visit to the Meštrović Gallery in Split.
The Meštrović Gallery is a museum institution founded in 1952, located in the palace of Ivan Meštrović, which was built for residential and working purposes between 1931 and 1936. Today its holdings are rich, comprising a total of 192 sculptures, 583 drawings, 4 paintings and 291 architectural plans. The items date from the period between 1898 and 1961.
Through the deed of donation by which Ivan Meštrović gave the Croatian people four of his buildings and 132 works of art, the conditions were created for the formation of the Meštrović Gallery as a museum institution.
The Gallery houses the artist's masterpieces executed in marble, bronze, wood and plaster. In these works the artist covered all periods of his rich creative output up to 1946.
The permanent display follows a spatial-thematic arrangement. On the ground floor of the gallery is the central hall, arranged as a representative entrance space. It mostly contains marble sculptures. The dining room has retained the original character of the artist's home. It contains Meštrović's furniture, several paintings and bronze portraits of family members.
Upstairs, in the hall of the west wing, works by Meštrović created under the influence of Impressionism, Art Nouveau and Art Deco are displayed. The eastern hall is enriched with sculptures created mostly between the two world wars. Next to it is an interesting special hall on the theme of Job. The large central hall on the first floor is intended for the display of sculpture, but also for occasional cultural events in the Gallery space. The permanent display of sculptures on the first floor is complemented by Meštrović's drawings.
Besides the museum exhibits, the Gallery also preserves documentation relating to the life and work of Ivan Meštrović. There are photographs of the artist's first works, taken at the beginning of the century in Vienna and Paris, as well as numerous archival materials.
If you have come to Split, love art and are interested in Croatia's rich history, be sure to visit the Meštrović Gallery and see the wealth that the artist bestowed upon his compatriots.
