As far back as 2013, the town of Trogir ceremonially opened the Garagnin-Fanfogna Park to the public. The park has existed on this site since the early 19th century, but it had been devastated, neglected, and in no way a part of the town that Trogir could be proud of. Fortunately, it has now been renovated and opened for all lovers of nature, botanists, and those who simply wish to take a stroll through the shade of the tall crowns of its varied trees.
This is the first public opening in almost half a century, ever since „dances“ used to be held at the park's entrance.
It is said to have been the most beautiful botanical garden in Europe at the beginning of the 19th century. Its devastation began after the Second World War, when its owners, the noble family Garagnin-Fanfogna, left for Italy. The neglected park suffered from a lack of care that lasted until quite recently, when it was completely cleaned and refreshed to shine in its full glory.
Unfortunately, for a certain period no one took care of the park, which caused it to deteriorate rapidly. Still, better times have come for the park, and likewise for all those who like to spend time in a natural setting, surrounded by numerous plant and animal species.
At one point in its existence, the park contained as many as 359 plant species. Today there are not as many, but we are confident that, over time, the situation will return to what it once was. Objects and sculptures within the park were deteriorating and collapsing, so the overall state of the park was below any standard.
The time for renovation has finally arrived, so today we have a park in which many people can enjoy themselves without worry. It is located barely fifty metres from the UNESCO historic core.
During the renovation of the park, its original appearance was strictly respected, and will continue to be respected in the future. The opening of the park's gates to the public symbolically marks the beginning of the realisation of the renovation project.
The Ex-Fanfogna Park will finally regain its former splendour, and we hope it will become a favourite gathering place for many of Trogir's guests, as well as for its hosts.
