What to see in Makarska?

A town of rich history certainly has much to offer. To explore Makarska, we suggest you start at the largest town square, Andrija Kačić Miošić Square. The square is adorned with a monument, the work of Ivan Rendić, erected in 1890. Various entertainments and other events are held on the square. The square was named after the most famous folk poet not only of the Makarska Riviera but of the whole Dalmatian people, Andrija Kačić Miošić, author of the most widely read book in Dalmatia after the Bible, which has so far gone through 64 editions. This is the well-known 'Pleasant Conversation of the Slavic People'.

On the northern side the square is closed off by the Church of St Mark, built in 1766. Behind the church stands an old school built at the end of the 19th century, with elements of classicism and neo-Renaissance. Today the Town Library, the Gojak Gallery and the Music School are housed within its walls. Right on this square, between the monument and the church, there is also a Venetian fountain from 1775. It is worth mentioning that carved on it is a ban on washing goods and watering livestock, which has been in place since the time Makarska received drinking water.

In the immediate vicinity of the popular Hotel Osejava there is a sports centre with pitches for football and rugby. In this sports centre you can also play basketball, handball, tennis or any other sport of your choice. This sports centre is active in the winter months too, mostly because it is partly roofed, and because of the favourable climatic conditions that are special to this part of our coast.

In Makarska you can also see museums, sanctuaries and other buildings left over from the town's rich history.

The Malacological Museum is housed in a Franciscan monastery, and today it holds over 3000 exhibited shells. The museum also keeps a valuable collection of herbarium plants from Mount Biokovo, and a somewhat smaller palaeontological collection. There are also numerous species of shells from tropical and subtropical seas, which are among the most attractive in colour and shape of all shells.

If you have come to Makarska, we suggest you visit the peninsula of St Peter, which lies in the southern part of the town and is special for the remains of an old church and its caves. On the peninsula there are wonderful long promenades that connect all the places of the Makarska Riviera.

The Sanctuary of Vepric is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, and was founded in 1908 by Bishop Dr Juraj Carić. Many tourists visit this place every year, and all of them are delighted especially by the landscape and the general impression during the short excursion. The hills, the vegetation and the stream that flows nearby will awaken pleasant feelings in everyone, and the cave you can see if you come will enchant you and show you still more of the power and beauty of nature.

The Co-cathedral of St Mark is located at the top of Kačić Square. Construction of this church in the Baroque style began around 1700. Right at the entrance to the co-cathedral, on the right-hand side, there is an altar in which the bones of St Clement, patron of the town of Makarska and of the Makarska diocese, are kept. Lovers of history and art will enjoy this old building. It is well preserved and maintained. Be sure to come and see the co-cathedral in Makarska.

Excursions from Makarska and its nearby surroundings

The position of the Makarska Riviera is excellent for organising interesting one-day or half-day excursions to nearby places.

Choose the tour that seems most interesting to you. The choice is large and varied, so we will mention just a few of the offers.

For nature lovers the most interesting may be the excursion to Mount Biokovo. By car you reach the top of Biokovo in half an hour, and once up there you have time to look around in peace and quiet. The view from Biokovo will enchant you, and the journey up and back can be enriched further by a visit to one of the restaurants in the village of Gornji Tučepi.

Extreme sports in Makarska

We must boast of a rich offer of adrenaline sports. In recent years we have noticed a growing demand for extreme sports, so our offer now includes diving in all areas of the Makarska Riviera, free climbing on the surrounding hills and on Mount Biokovo, paragliding from Biokovo, exploring the caves of Mount Biokovo, and hiking, walking and cycling on Mount Biokovo.

Gastro offer

As you may suppose, our gastronomic offer is shaped by Dalmatian cuisine, which is made up of dishes of fresh fish prepared in the most varied ways. You will enjoy fish specialities such as brudet, grilled fish, octopus under the peka and others.

All dishes are seasoned with domestic olive oil with the addition of various natural spices. Dalmatian prosciutto with cheese and olives dominates the local restaurants and is one of the better-known Dalmatian cold starters.

Besides the already mentioned specialities of fresh fish, be sure to try the Dalmatian pašticada too. It is a speciality made from veal, stuffed with bacon and garlic and cooked in red wine, with meat and potatoes under the peka, served with vegetable salads.

To finish, we will also mention the well-known dessert of the Makarska area, Makarska Rafioli.
