Supetar is a town in Croatia, located on the island of Brač. It is in fact the largest settlement on this island, and its economic, cultural and tourist centre. As many as one fifth of the people of Brač live in Supetar.
It is situated in the bay of St Peter, after which it got its name. This small town has a harbour and good transport links with Split. Supetar is a desirable tourist destination for many, especially for sailors, who have many bays to choose from. Apart from sailors, Supetar is visited by guests who enjoy lying on beautiful beaches, sightseeing monuments, churches and other cultural and historical landmarks.
The church the town is especially proud of is the parish church of the Annunciation of Mary. There is also a large number of works by the sculptor Ivan Rendić, who spent part of his life in Supetar. In Supetar you can enjoy visiting the early Romanesque church of St Luke, which stands right above the town.
The economy of the town on the island is based mostly on tourism. Supetar has a large number of hotel and apartment beds. The offer of private accommodation is rich and follows high standards. Choose the best place for you to stay and visit us.
Apart from the rich choice of accommodation, Supetar also offers a rich gastronomic scene. The town is often visited by “domestic” guests too, mostly from nearby Split, when people escape the city crowds and unbearable heat.
In the last few years Supetar has welcomed a growing number of guests, most of whom arrive by ferry through the town harbour.
It is interesting that a smaller town on the Adriatic has the second busiest harbour in Croatia. Yes, you read that right. The port of Supetar is the second busiest port on the Adriatic. Over one and a half million passengers and more than half a million vehicles pass through this port every year. These figures support the development of tourism in this town, and on the island in general.
The tourist facilities are constantly being enriched and adapted to the needs of guests. From season to season Supetar becomes richer in offer, especially with summer events and festivals that entertain guests.
Supetar has for years hosted the international culinary festival Biser mora (Pearl of the Sea) in April. The town is also home to the Brač Film Festival of documentary and feature films, the Voi Sa Music festival in August, and two large carnival events.
Historic buildings will attract many lovers of history and architecture. The parish church of the Annunciation of Mary was built in the 18th century on the foundations of the early Christian basilica of St Peter. The mosaic discovered in 1975 is the best evidence of this. Right next to the church are early Christian mosaics from the 6th century, as well as the Leroj (bell tower with a clock) and the church museum. At the very entrance to the museum stands a sculpture of St Victor, the work of the sculptor Petar Jakšić. The sculptor is also the author of the sculpture of Mother Teresa at the entrance to the church courtyard.
There are many other sculptures and sights you can see, so come and enjoy them.
In the Supetar cemetery are gravestones made by the sculptor Ivan Rendić. There is also the famous mausoleum of the Petrinović family, the most significant work of Toma Rosandić.
Near the town is the Kopačina cave, which dates from the Neolithic period.
When we mention the beaches in Supetar, it is best to describe the two best known – Vlačica beach and the sandy bay Banj.
Banj bay is especially suitable for families with small children, but everyone who comes will enjoy it. The two beaches are connected to each other, so the tourist offer is in a way identical. On the beaches you have a water slide, and you can rent sunbeds and an umbrella. At Vlačica there are also a couple of catering facilities, which will come in handy after swimming and spending enough time under the sun.
Apart from the mentioned beaches, there are some others too, but you will have to visit and get to know them in person – when you come to us.
