Krka National Park, known for its magnificent waterfalls, is located near Skradin in Šibenik-Knin County. Croatia's second most visited national park has numerous attractions to offer tourists, from exceptionally preserved nature and a wonderful landscape to cultural sights and active holidays. If you are a nature lover, or you enjoy exploring the culture of the local population, Krka National Park is the ideal destination for you.
The park covers 109 km² of the Krka River's course and the lower course of the Čikola River, and the length of the Krka River's course is 72.5 km, which makes it the 22nd longest river in Croatia. Its waterfalls, with a total drop of 225 metres, are particularly notable.

One of the more important things that people often forget to mention is the beautiful little town of Skradin, with which almost every trip to Krka National Park begins. With somewhat fewer than 500 inhabitants, Skradin offers a history and cultural heritage that many larger towns could envy.

From Skradin there are several boat lines that go directly to the waterfalls, and transport is included in the price of the ticket. During the ride, which lasts less than half an hour, you can enjoy the beautiful banks of the Krka, and you might even spot a swan or two. If you have an adventurous spirit, you can reach Krka National Park via a hiking or cycling trail. It is recommended that you visit the park as early as possible so that you can enjoy the forest of waterfalls and the wonderful nature.

The longest waterfalls of the Krka River, called Skradinski buk, are probably the main reason for your visit to this national park. With over 17 steps and a total height difference of 45 m, Skradinski buk lives up to its title as the most beautiful natural beauty spot in Croatia. Swimming is allowed at the foot of Skradinski buk, so you can cool off after a long tour of the Krka, which really does have numerous things you must not miss. One of those things is the ethno village, where you can see stone watermills from the 19th century, as well as numerous items once used by the local population.

Krka National Park also has a rich gastronomic offer, so you can try local specialities, among which you definitely should not miss prosciutto and cheese.

Along the trail that stretches throughout the national park, there are educational panels where you can read numerous interesting facts connected to the Krka.

A whole book, if not more, could be written about the attractions Krka National Park has to offer, but nothing can replace the indescribable experience of a trip to this national park.

Krka National Park got its name from the Krka River, which is an integral part of the park. As it flows through nature, the river creates a beautiful atmosphere, and in certain places, waterfalls that are simply enchanting. The park is known for its waterfalls, so it is most visited in the summer months, during the hot weather. Many people come here to cool off, but also to enjoy the natural greenery of the surrounding tree canopies and the blue-green colours of the Krka River.

The national park is located just a few kilometres northeast of Šibenik, and its area covers the region along the Krka River. The national park follows the course of the river, from its source at the foot of Mount Dinara, all the way through the canyon it flows through, to Lake Prokljan and the Bay of Šibenik. The park's area is 109 square kilometres, of which some 25 square kilometres is water surface, while the rest (the larger part) is land.

The park's natural beauty is most reflected in the waterfalls of the Krka River, of which there are 7, and which together form a natural karst phenomenon. You can experience the most beautiful natural „show“ in spring and summer, when the waterfalls are at their most splendid and the temperatures allow you to cool off in the water right next to the waterfalls.

Krka National Park – The founding of the park and interesting details

Krka National Park was officially established on 24 January 1985, and is the seventh national park in Croatia in order of establishment. As we already mentioned, Krka park is known for its large number of lakes and waterfalls.

It is interesting to note that the Jaruga hydroelectric power plant below the Skradinski buk waterfall is the second oldest hydroelectric power plant in the world, and the oldest in Europe. The power plant was built on 28 August 1895, only three days after the hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls, which is the oldest hydroelectric power plant in the world.

The waterfalls of the Krka (the larger ones) are: Bilušića buk, Brljanski slap, Manojlovac, Rošnjak, Miljacka, Roški slap and Skradinski buk. Each of them is special and adorns the park with its beauty and the dynamics of the flowing water. At the foot of the waterfalls there are natural bathing areas, which are full in the summer months and are the main attraction for the park's visitors.

Natural wealth of the park

The national park is a perfectly preserved natural environment, enriched by the flows of two rivers – the Krka and the Čikola – as well as a diverse plant and animal world. The park's purpose is primarily scientific, cultural, educational and recreational, but due to great tourist interest, its activities have also expanded to tourism.
