NP Plitvice, or Plitvice Lakes, is located between the Mala Kapela mountains to the west and Plješivica to the east. Situated in the middle of the Dinaric mountain massif, Plitvice is, in the truest sense of the word, a natural phenomenon.
The preserved nature here truly comes into its own, and in full splendour, in a small area, shows off its beauty and its skill of transformation over a long period of time.
Plitvice National Park is located next to the D1 state road Zagreb - Split, between the towns of Slunj and Korenica. Larger towns near Plitvice are Ogulin, Rakovica, Otočac and Gospić.
Plitvice National Park consists of 16 lakes. Interestingly, each of the lakes lies at a different altitude, so the lakes cascade and gradually flow down into one another. Because of this difference in altitude, the lakes are divided into the Upper and Lower Lakes.

Upper Lakes: Prošćansko Lake, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko Lake, Malo Lake, Vir, Galovac, Milino Lake, Gradinsko Lake, Veliki Burget and Kozjak.
The Lower Lakes are: Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod.
The largest lake in the park is Lake Kozjak, which covers an area of around 80 hectares (slightly more), and is also the deepest lake (47 metres deep) in Plitvice.

Plitvice Lakes is rich in waterfalls, since the lakes cascade into one another. One of the most beautiful waterfalls at Plitvice is the one between Milanovac and Gavanovac. We call this waterfall the „Milka Trnina Waterfall“, after the Croatian opera prima donna.
