The Trogir Town Museum is today a popular gathering place for tourists – who love history and art, but also for groups who will best round off their day while touring this beautiful town.
The Museum itself was founded back in 1963, but was opened to the public only a few years later – on 9 May 1966. It is located near the northern town gate, in the palace of the Garagnin family, who came to Trogir from Venice at the end of the 16th century.
The palace took its final shape over time. It consists of two blocks of Romanesque and Gothic houses which, according to the design of Ignacije Macanović, were extended and merged into a single complex in the second half of the 18th century. The main entrance to the palace, with its vestibule and staircase, was on the east side of the block, on the main town street, and is decorated with late Baroque ornamentation. Today the vestibule houses a museum exhibition space (the atrium of the Trogir Town Museum), while the permanent exhibition of the Trogir Town Museum is located upstairs.
The main entrance to the Museum is in the western block of the palace, formed around an inner courtyard. In the southern single-storey wing with an external staircase, which once had an economic function, the Lapidarium and the Cata Dujšin Ribar Gallery are housed, while in the northern late Baroque multi-storey wing, in its original early-19th-century interior, is a rich library founded by Ivan Luka Garagnin.
Along with the palace's original furniture, the ceiling decoration painted with portraits of philosophers and writers has also been preserved. The museum can boast a library of 5,582 titles on various subjects, said to be the richest private library in Dalmatia.
The permanent exhibition of our museum will acquaint you with the history of the town and its surroundings from prehistory to the 20th century.
If you are interested in the origin of the town, its development and the changes it underwent over a long period of time, you should definitely come and visit the museum.
