Besides the wonderful installation – Greeting to the Sun, the Zadar Riva is enriched by yet another unusual and above all interesting structure. Guests who come to the Riva can enjoy a beautiful view, as well as the music created by the sea waves as they strike the walls of the Riva.
The sound comes from organ pipes located beneath the stone cladding of the Riva. The Sea Organ in Zadar is a unique architectural achievement. It is special and above all original in every respect.
Unlike ordinary organs, which are powered by bellows or air pumps, the sound of the Zadar organ is created by the influence of the energy of the sea, that is, of the waves and the tides. It is located on the western part of the Zadar Riva, lightly submerged in the sea – just enough for the waves to “play”.
The author of the Sea Organ is engineer Nikola Bašić, who is also the author of the other famous installation – Greeting to the Sun. The co-authors of the Sea Organ are graduate engineer Ivica Stamać (in charge of sound), Dr. Prof. Vladimir Andročec (hydraulics), and the Heferer organ-building workshop (which tuned this unusual instrument).
This part of the Riva is excellently visited. Here you can come and enjoy the setting sun, or perhaps the colours of the nearby installation, while the waves of the sea play in the background. In fact, the waves play in collaboration with the organ pipes that are hidden beneath the stone surface.
To finish, we don't have too much more to write, except to persuade you to visit Zadar, or rather the Zadar Riva, and enjoy an evening concert amid the colourful display created by Greeting to the Sun.
The Zadar Riva is special, and is certainly a place that everyone should visit. If you get the chance, don't miss it.
