Besides a large number of historical buildings, walls and old harbours, Zadar has recently become richer with one modern architectural installation – Greeting to the Sun.
Greeting to the Sun is an installation by architect Nikola Bašić, located in the Zadar harbour, in the stone paving of the city's waterfront promenade.
The Riva in Zadar has become a tourist attraction, and a favourite gathering place for many citizens of Zadar, as well as for guests who come to Zadar. The view from the Riva will delight everyone who takes a walk there, especially in the evening hours when the sun sets and the light effects in the aforementioned installation begin to switch on.
Greeting to the Sun is made up of 300 multi-layered glass plates. The plates are set at the same level as the stone paving of the Riva, and are designed to be walked on. Besides the Sun, which dominates this installation, the other planets of the Solar System are also carefully arranged. The sizes of the plates of the Sun and the planets are proportional. Beneath the glass plates are photovoltaic solar modules, through which a symbolic communication with nature is achieved. The whole installation is designed so that people's footsteps activate the light modules, which then light up with a particular rhythm and intensity. The plates light up in different colours, creating an even better effect in this way.
The Zadar Riva is a place for a pleasant stroll, conversation and rest on benches facing the sea. In itself, the Riva is a beautiful and pleasant place for everyone who visits it. It is further enhanced by two modern installations – the Greeting to the Sun and the Sea Organ, which have made it one of the most noted in the world.
