The island of Krk was inhabited as long ago as 15,000 years before Christ, so its rich historical and cultural offer should not be surprising. The first known inhabitants of Krk were the Japodes, an Illyrian tribe who were later succeeded by the Liburni. At that time the Greeks called all the Kvarner islands Apsyrtides and Elektrides, that is, Amber Islands, because through them passed the trade in highly valued amber from the Baltic to the whole Mediterranean.
Today we know that the town of Krk is one of the oldest urban settlements in Croatia. Some believe that even Homer knew of Krk, because in his epic he mentions Koureto, which is thought to refer to today's Krk.
The town as we know it today consists of 15 settlements, namely Bajčići, Brusići, Brzac, Kornić, Krk, Lakmartin, Linardići, Milohnići, Muraj, Nenadići, Pinezići, Poljica, Skrbčići, Vrh and Žgaljići.
We should mention that, economically speaking, this is the most developed island town in Croatia. The infrastructure of this town is also in first place when compared with other towns on Croatian islands.
The long history of the town, various events and the course of time have left many treasures on the island. If we write about the monuments and sights on this island, we will mention:
Krk Cathedral dominates the view of the town of Krk. It was built on an elevated part that dominates the whole bay. This building reveals some artefacts dating as far back as the 1st century. It is certainly worth visiting and looking around.
Volsonis is an archaeological site that reveals more than two thousand years of the history of the town of Krk. This is another location that is certainly worth visiting, exploring and studying the interesting details from the time of its origin.
After Ston and Dubrovnik, the town of Krk has the third largest city walls in Croatia. The city walls date back to the Illyrian period, and they were renovated and extended over several millennia. On the land side the town of Krk was completely surrounded by walls, which determined the internal layout of the settlement. That appearance remained until the end of the 19th century, and then at the beginning of the 20th century the town began to spread beyond the city walls.
Another building to visit on Krk. It is considered to be the most significant Romanesque object in Krk. It is a double church, dating from the 12th century. This church was built in a small space opposite the cathedral, which allowed a north-south orientation rather than the east-west orientation it should have had. It is a two-storey building, which is a great rarity in our region: the upper floor houses the church of St. Quirinus, and the lower floor the church of St. Margaret. It is special right from the start of our description, and to gain a detailed insight into the beauty of its construction and its ingenuity, you will have to come to Krk and visit this building.
Churches have played a significant role throughout history, so they can be found in all Croatian towns. That is also the case on Krk, both in the town and on the island and other island settlements. Rather than listing all the churches on the island right now, we suggest that you come to our island and take in all the beauty.
Tourism is especially cultivated on the island of Krk. Apart from fishing and agriculture, the island's inhabitants largely enjoy the benefits of this economic branch. Tourism is vital for most islanders, and given the large number of sunny and warm days in the year, the tourist season is especially rich on the island.
To accommodate their guests, the islanders offer an adequate number of hotel accommodations, but Krk can also boast a large selection of private apartments. There are of course campsites too, so we leave the choice to you.
If you opt for private accommodation – see the offer of apartments on Krk. Otherwise, look for a hotel to your liking or a campsite that suits you. However you decide to spend your time on our island, we will do our best to make your stay as pleasant as possible. We look forward to welcoming you.
