Umag is a town on the western Istrian coast, only 10 kilometres from the Slovenian border, and together with Savudrija it is the westernmost place in the Republic of Croatia.
So it is the first town you reach if you come to Istria from the north. Umag wins you over at first sight with its charm and its varied and very rich offer. It is a small town which will adorn the region with its coastline, give it a special charm and a different look from the other parts of the Mediterranean coast.
It is interesting to mention the very beginnings of this town. Namely, Umag was discovered by Roman nobles, who decided to claim it as their summer residence. From the very beginning this town had an enchanting beauty. Fortunately, it is beautiful today too, and many historic buildings bear witness to the lasting beauty of the town. The charm of the town's streets, stone walls and the tower in the town still bears witness to the glamour and splendour of Umag today. The Venetian houses in the old town centre are a faithful picture of the town's wealth from its beginnings right up to the present day.
Behind Umag you can see smaller hills with enchanting fortresses and incredible views. The view towards the sea will refresh even the most weary gaze. The crystal shades of blue will awaken only the best feelings in a person. The sea in this region is very clean and pleasantly warm. It is suitable for swimming from May to October.
It is important to mention that over the last few years Umag has recorded an exceptional increase in the number of guests, who stay longer and are increasingly satisfied with the offer of our town. We are pleased by the positive reviews of guests who have been here and who announce their return. Of course, thanks to the positive reviews, our town is also an interesting destination for people who have not yet been to Umag.
A large number of overnight stays, satisfied guests and published texts about our town are to a large extent thanks to the rich tourist offer that Umag has. Without high-quality content, accommodation capacities and a well-kept town there is no progress in tourism. It is a branch of economic development that does not forgive mistakes. We are aware of this, so from year to year we strive to offer even better, more interesting and maximally diverse things.
Umag has a large number of accommodation facilities, whether these are luxury hotels, family villas or apartments. In the immediate vicinity there is also a considerable number of ecologically designed campsites, which blend into the surrounding natural environment.
Because of all we have mentioned, you can easily conclude that Umag is a distinctly tourist town. Natural beauties and the geographical position of the town were decisive for the beginning of tourism, which the locals later successfully raised to the level it reaches today. In recent years Umag has become a TOP destination for many, and the town is gladly mentioned in the columns of various world portals that write about tourism.
The development of tourism in this area was also favoured by the fertile soil, which is accompanied by agriculture. Olive and vine cultivation particularly stand out. These two crops have become a tradition and a feature characteristic of the Mediterranean region. Along with grape growing, winemaking has developed. The wines of Istria are widely known and esteemed, and their producers are included in the wine route of this area.
Although it lies on a beautiful coast bathed in clean sea, Umag is not a town that lives exclusively in the summer months. Because of its varied offer and very rich content, this town in Istria lives throughout the whole year.
Culture and art favour the town in every respect, and its development in general. Over time tourism has formed a symbiosis with culture and art, so Umag will present all its charm no matter what time of year you visit.
The Ante Babić People's Open University is the main centre of cultural events in this town. The most important events in the fields of art and culture are organised and held here.

It is housed in a medieval tower from the 14th/15th century, and it takes special pride in a collection of six kinds of exhibits: numismatic, cultural-historical, archaeological, fine art, a collection of photographs and postcards. In addition, this museum also keeps the historical symbol of Umag – a bronze early-medieval earring which experts have classed as the "umaška" type because of its uniqueness.
The ATP Umag – Croatia Open is certainly the best-known sporting event in our town. It is known all over the world, and it has been held regularly since 1990.
Besides tennis tournaments, Umag can boast a long tradition of handball. There is also the bocce club "Umag" and the football club "Umag". Some other sports have also taken root in our town, but we will talk about those on another occasion.
