Rijeka is a city that lives throughout the whole year, yet, as it lies on our coast, tourism here reaches its peak in the summer months.
As is the case in most coastal towns, Rijeka also draws the most attention on hot summer days. Then the city wakes up in a special mood, although it is also very dynamic throughout the year. If you want to get to know Rijeka, see the tourist offer of the city and experience the hospitality of the people of Rijeka, be sure to come.
Rijeka is known for many things, and we will single out just a few interesting facts. Rijeka is the largest Croatian port, the city of a water polo club with great successes, and more recently also the city of the champion of the Prva HNL football league.
The City of Rijeka is the third largest city in Croatia and, as we have already written, it is the largest Croatian port.
Already in Roman times, the first dwellings were built at the mouth of the Rječina river, which over time would give the city its present appearance. A city of these dimensions has a rich history and heritage. Today, walls, dwellings and historical monuments can be seen in many places. History and culture lovers will certainly enjoy Rijeka. Another special feature of Rijeka is the promenade – the Korzo. Many say that this is also the most beautiful promenade in Croatia, and one of the most visited. There is always a crowd on the Korzo in Rijeka, but not in the sense that you would want to avoid walking through. Quite the opposite, the Korzo is full of tourists and various entertainers who will enhance the experience as you stroll along the promenade.
Since the early 19th century the Korzo has been the lifeblood of the city. The main city events and various attractions take place here. The Korzo has become a kind of symbol of the city, a meeting place and a place of entertainment. Guests who visit Rijeka must come to the Korzo as well – as the saying goes, “if you have not been on the Korzo, it is as if you have not visited Rijeka”.
Besides the events and the entertainers already mentioned on the Korzo, we should also mention that numerous city institutions are located on this street.
The central part of the Korzo is dominated by the City Tower with its clock, which is rightly a favourite meeting point for the people of Rijeka. Of course, besides locals, guests will also gather here to look at the tower and take a good photo of Rijeka.
In brief, we will mention Rijeka's offer for tourists who come here in the summer months to enjoy the sun, swim and sunbathe, but also to make good use of the rest of the day.
Rijeka is truly rich in various events. Some of them are announced on the city's website, but there are also events that take place regularly year after year – which we can mention on this occasion.
One of the better-known events is the celebration of the Feast of the Assumption at the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat. It all began back in 1291, when the Trsat woodcutters noticed a little house in the forest that had not been there before. According to tradition, it was the house of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Nazareth. According to the same tradition, for fear of the Turkish conquerors, angels carried the little house to Trsat, where it stood for three years and seven months. Today a Marian shrine known for the pilgrimages of many believers stands on that spot. The largest number of pilgrims come here on 15 August, on the feast of the Assumption.
Rijeka has four museums – the Natural History Museum Rijeka, the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, the City Museum of Rijeka and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. There is a sufficient number of museums even for the greatest lovers of history and art. Besides the four museums mentioned, you can visit the detached collections of the Maritime and History Museum in Kastav and Dobrinj. There is also another detached exhibition in the Zrinski Castle in Brod na Kupi, and some exhibitions in the Small Salon.
The Rijeka Carnival is world-famous. It consists of a carnival parade, a carnival festival, the election of the Queen of the Rijeka Carnival, the carnival ball held in the Governor's Palace, carnival concerts, a carnival exhibition, carnival sports and a children's carnival game. It is a truly rich programme that brings together crowds and offers plenty of entertainment. The high point of the Rijeka Carnival is the masked parades that pass through the city centre on the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Parades from various parts of Croatia and from abroad take part in the Rijeka Carnival. The themes are varied, so you can see traditional parades and modern ones – all in one place.
The parades move in a circle from the riverside, past the Delta and end on the Korzo. Along this route, 6 stages have been set up where presenters introduce the participants.
A special feature of the Rijeka Carnival is the participation of the bell-ringers. They are known for their costumes and performance. The bell-ringers are wrapped in sheepskins with a bell around their waist. Because of the successful organisation of the carnival, Rijeka has become a member of the European Association of Carnival Cities. Be sure to see the carnival if you have the chance.
We have mentioned that Rijeka is the largest port in Croatia, which means that you will not find swimming beaches in the very centre of the city. Sea traffic is of great importance to the city, but tourism certainly has its place as well. With this in mind, the people of Rijeka have managed to set up and present to the world the beaches in their city.
The beaches are full from spring until late autumn. We can thank the pleasant Mediterranean climate that prevails here for this. The Rijeka beaches are well arranged and well equipped. Despite heavy traffic, they are graced by clean sea, which is best proven by the fact that Ploče beach and Kostanj beach are proud holders of the Blue Flag. The sea at these beaches is clean and of a beautiful blue colour, which stands out especially in strong summer sunshine.
The location of the city means that the beaches are found at the extreme east and the extreme west. On one side of the city – to the east – there are eight beaches close to the very centre, and they can be reached easily and quickly. On the western side you can choose from five beaches located in Kantrida.
All beaches are served by city buses. They are easily accessible and are only a few minutes' walk from the bus stops.
Ploče beach in Rijeka – The beach is well equipped, so we will mention the changing cabins, showers and toilets. Besides this, in the water there is an area enclosed by buoys which contains equipment for water basketball. The beach has access to the water for disabled people, a lifeguard service and various catering facilities. As part of this beach there is a beach volleyball court and a swimming pool complex. Ploče beach is a holder of the Blue Flag.
Preluk beach in Rijeka – The beach is popular with surfers. Winds already appear in this area in the morning hours, which is why surfers and sailors gladly visit the beach. During the day the wind calms down, but there is just enough of it for gentle sailing, and not so much that you would not be able to swim and sunbathe on the beach. Preluk beach is equipped with a shower and toilets.
Kostanj cove is one of the better-known beaches in Rijeka – Kostanj is a city beach that has been specially adapted for people with disabilities. Bathers on the beach are watched over by trained lifeguards, who look after their safety. The bathing zone is marked by buoys, and in the shallow sea there is equipment for water basketball, as well as a ramp into the water for disabled people. Around the beach there is a catering facility, a shower, a car park and toilets – with the emphasis that these too are adapted for people with disabilities. This beach is also a holder of the Blue Flag.
The Rijeka coast is adorned with many other beaches as well, and the best way to convince yourself of their beauty is to come and visit them. Some are sandy, others are pebbly and some are rocky. The beaches are very well kept, excellently equipped and full, just as befits a city of this size. If you visit Rijeka, in the summer months of course, be sure to come to one of the beaches and enjoy the summer sun. We look forward to your arrival and wish you a pleasant stay.
