PPMI is an acronym for the History and Maritime Museum of Istria. It is a specialized museum of regional scope. The Museum operates as a public cultural and scientific institution, performing museum activities under the Law on Museums in the Republic of Croatia and operates in the territory of the County of Istria. The Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria is located in the Venetian fortress, that is, the old Kaštel, which dates back to the 17th century. The castle was built by the authorities of the Venetian Republic, with the aim of defending their possessions in southern Istria.

Departments and collections at the museum

PPMI is a public sector which has an activity defined by legal provisions. It operates as a single unit with four organizational units, namely the Department of History of the City of Pula, the Department of Medieval History of Istria, the Department of Istrian History of the New Age, and the Department of Naval History and Naval Architecture.

The museum boasts over 50,000 museum objects that have been processed or are being processed. among these are items that have been documented, stored and classified into 18 museum collections: Numismatic Collection, Archival Collection, Film and Video Collection, Photo Collection, Memoir Collection, Medals, Diplomas, Seals and Coats of Arms, Weapons Collection and military equipment, Posters and Promotional Materials Collection, Naval and Naval Collection, Monument Collection, Suburban Life Collection, Print Collection, Flag Collection, Feature Collection, Cartographic Collection, Audio Record Collection, City Life Collection, Old Postcard Collection and 10 more , documentation collections.

Although very rich and valuable in every way, the rich holdings of the museum can be distinguished by the special holdings of a collection of old postcards, maps, and a collection of weapons, uniforms and military equipment and navy.

The museum deals with the collection of cultural assets, in the time sequence from the developed Middle Ages, that is, from the 15th century to the present time. The items are expertly handled and stored, and protected and stored with the necessary documentation. Subsequently, these museum objects are presented directly or indirectly to the public through permanent or occasional exhibitions or through the publication of insights into museum material through professional, scientific and other informative means.

The museum today employs 9 people, with director Graciano Kesac at the helm.

Interesting facts to highlight

For almost 8 years (since 2011), the Museum has been managing the Zerostrasse tunnels, and after completing the restoration of the Austrian water tank (2015), is also managing the Visiting Center Herman Potočnik Noordung.

The Museum of Frescoes in Draguc has been operating as part of the museum since 2016.


Since the end of 2009, the Educational and Pedagogical Department has been operating in the PPMI, in charge of presenting and bringing the Museum closer to different groups of users. The program also deals with the education of children and young people from pre-school age to the student population, which fosters cooperation with kindergartens, schools, colleges and various other associations and educational institutions. The Museum strives to be as involved as possible in the various educational and pedagogical activities organized under the auspices of the Pedagogical Section of the Croatian Museum Society.

Museum Library

Within the PPMI Museum there is a closed-type library intended for professional museum staff. In certain situations, valuable literature is lent to students or made available to students, for the purpose of writing seminar papers and diploma papers, and for experts and scholars of different profiles. During the summer months, various public cultural and entertainment events, film screenings, theatrical performances and concerts are held in the open space (atrium of the Museum).
