This tourist attraction – the Maritime Museum in Dubrovnik – is located in the Dubrovnik Fortress of St John.
Pomorski muzej u Dubrovniku was founded in 1941, and began its journey by organising an exhibition entitled Maritime Routes and Dubrovnik through the Centuries. From 1949 the museum was part of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts, and in 1987 it merged with the Dubrovnik Museum.
We have already mentioned that the museum is located in the Fortress of St John, which was restored after the catastrophic earthquake of 1979. The museum's permanent exhibition was set up in 1986, and it presents the maritime history of the town of Dubrovnik and its surroundings.
Today the museum is of exceptional historical and cultural importance, and is also a very well-visited tourist destination. Every year a large number of guests visit the Maritime Museum in Dubrovnik, admiring the permanent exhibition and the numerous exhibitions organised every year.
The exhibition includes models of ships from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. There are also numerous flags, cannons and other weapons, as well as nautical instruments, ship's logs, maps, various documents, and a valuable library with many rare copies of books and important archival material.
Only some of the items from the museum's permanent exhibition are:
Goblet
Navigation compass
Bill of lading of the sailing ship "Sto Nic. Jozepo"
Cover of the ship's logbook of the Dubrovnik ship "S. Spirito"
Model of a Dubrovnik galleon
