The Ploče Gate is an old entrance to Dubrovnik's old town, located from the eastern direction. It is thus the eastern entrance to Dubrovnik's old town, and is located in the Ploče district, after which it was named.
If you want to visit the Ploče Gate, you will pass along the way between the southern side of the Dominican Monastery and the city wall. Along the way you pass by two small churches – the Church of St Luke and the Church of the Annunciation of Mary.
Continuing further along the very wall of the Revelin Fortress, you will reach the furthest prominent eastern point of the Ploče Gate, which leads to the extramural district of Ploče. This historic complex of approaches to the city consists of inner and outer gates from the 15th century. Stone bridges were also built, and above the inner gate rises the Asimon Tower as part of the city walls. The outer bridge also has a wooden section that used to be raised at night in the past. The bridge served to protect the city during the night and made passage easier during the day.
And above the Ploče Gate stands the stone figure of the city's protector – St Blaise. Today this is where the way passes towards the hotels and beaches in the Ploče district.
The interior part of the complex was built in the Romanesque style, as was the figure of St Blaise found there. Another, much wider gate was later cut through next to the inner gate, during the Austrian occupation in the 19th century. The Ploče Gate has an outer and an inner gate, as well as a combination of a stone and a wooden bridge. Thus the first part of the bridge, raised over the moat, was built of stone, while in front of the outer gate itself there is a movable wooden bridge. Right next to the outer part of the Ploče Gate stands the Revelin Fortress. This fortress is not part of the walls themselves, but it is included in the city's defensive system.
Today many guests of Dubrovnik will come to this location to view the historic buildings and the aforementioned statue of St Blaise. The whole surrounding area is preserved and maintained, and reflects the former appearance in the best possible way. Also, very popular and well known is the Feast of St Blaise in Dubrovnik.
