Šubićevac Fortress, once known as Baron Degenfeld Fortress, is located to the north of the old town core of Šibenik.
The fortress lies a few hundred metres southeast of St John's Fortress. It stands at an altitude of 80 metres, on a hill called Vidakuša. The hill is called Vidakuša because, before the fortress was built, a small church of St Vitus stood on it. The church was built in 1646, at the same time as St John's Fortress, and together with it played a significant role in defending the town from the Turks in 1647.
For a long time it bore the name of Baron Degenfeld, a German who was in the service of the Venetian Republic. Degenfeld led the defence of Šibenik from 1646 to 1647.
In 1659 the fortress was extended and restored by Antun Bernardo, who did the same with St John's Fortress.
The Šibenik town council bought the fortress and its surrounding area in 1912 and named that part of town Šubićevac, after the old Croatian noble family of Šubić. Šubićevac Fortress is somewhat smaller than St John's Fortress, but is more easily accessible to visitors. From its walls there is a magnificent view of the old town, Šibenik's St Anthony's Channel and the islands of the Šibenik archipelago.
