The Archaeological Museum in Zadar was founded in 1832 as the second oldest museum in Croatia and is one of the oldest in this part of Europe. We are proud of our truly rich collection of exhibits and we invite all lovers of history and culture to come and visit us.
In the Archaeological Museum we have objects on display from the Roman period and various prehistoric materials from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Metal Ages, as well as archaeological remains from the period between the 7th and 12th centuries, most of which are linked to the material and spiritual heritage of the Croats.

The Archaeological Museum in Zadar is specialised and has departments for prehistoric, ancient and medieval archaeology, a department for underwater archaeological research, a department for educational and andragogical activities, a conservation-restoration department, a library and some others. It also houses the Museum of Nin Antiquities. As a state museum, the Archaeological Museum in Zadar covers the area of Zadar County, including the islands of Rab and Pag.

The museum has a permanent exhibition, a restoration and preparation workshop, and a library. The Benkovac Heritage Museum is also part of our museum.

Where is the museum located?

The Zadar Archaeological Museum is located in a newly built building in the centre of the historic core of Roman Iadera. It is situated near the Roman forum and capitolium, as well as Zadar's main street, Kalelarga. In the immediate vicinity of the museum building are the Romanesque Cathedral of St Anastasia, the monastery and church of St Mary with the Permanent Exhibition of Church Art, and the pre-Romanesque Church of St Donatus.

In terms of the value of its holdings and research area, it is one of the most important museums in Croatia. It is certainly worth a visit.
