There is no need to specially point out the beauty of the aforementioned cities, but it is certainly an honour for us to inform you that Šibenik and Zadar have received yet another praiseworthy world recognition.
The 41st session of the World Heritage Committee was recently held in Kraków, at which our cities were also particularly distinguished. To cut the story short, Zadar and Šibenik have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. To be a little more precise, this prestigious list now includes the defence system of Zadar and the fortress of St Nicholas, located on the small island of Ljuljevac, at the entrance to the St Anthony Channel near Šibenik.
These valuable Croatian locations were inscribed as part of the proposed nomination "Venetian Works of Defence between 15th and 17th centuries: Stato da Terra - western Stato da Mar, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro".
Alongside Croatia, the fortified city of Bergamo, Peschiera del Garda and the city walls of Palmanova in Italy, as well as the city of Kotor in Montenegro, have also been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. We are certainly proud of the fact that our two cities find themselves in such select company.
Now, to sum it up, we can say that the World Heritage List already contains 7 Croatian sites.
The sites in Croatia are: the Old Town of Dubrovnik, Diocletian's Palace, the historic centre of Trogir, the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, the Stari Grad Plain, and the stećci (together with neighbouring countries), as well as Šibenik's Cathedral of St James. This means Šibenik has now left its second mark on this list.
Without subjective views, slogans and the like – we can rightly boast to the whole world about these new accolades for our beautiful homeland. Croatia has received two further confirmations of its historical wealth, preservation and the valuing of its historical assets.
From a tourism point of view, we are richer by two more accolades with which we can guarantee the authenticity and beauty of old buildings, as well as the enjoyment of the landmarks that we proudly show to the world.
