Korčula is a town on the island of the same name in Croatia.

Historical evidence tells us that the island was inhabited already in prehistoric times, and traces of ancient life have been discovered in many places. The oldest finds of stone knives from the Neolithic, on the islet of Badija, speak of the beginnings of the island and its historical culture.

The history of the town itself, and of the island too, is very rich, and to get to know it best you should come and see the old buildings, historical finds and other sculptures.

The most famous Neolithic site is Vela Spilja cave. It is located in Vela Luka and is still a popular destination on this island. The Croats arrived on this island in the 7th century and soon founded their own state. Originally it was a principality, and from 925, with the coronation of the first king, Tomislav, it became a kingdom.

That is a short history of the island and the town of Korčula. Now let us say a little about the economy, and then about the tourist offer of this island.

Town of Korčula – economy and tourism

The town of Korčula consists of 5 settlements: the town of Korčula, Čara, Pupnat, Račišće and Žrnovo. It is an old town leaning against the sea in every sense. That is why it is so interesting today and so often visited, especially in the summer months.

Korčula's Town Day can certainly be singled out as a tourist attraction. It is celebrated on St. Theodore's day, 29 July. An interesting fact is that the patron saint of Korčula is St. Mark, but the cult of St. Theodore is much more pronounced in the town. It is a celebration that will delight everyone who finds themselves nearby.

Another recognisable event in Korčula is the knightly game Moreška. It is a game in which the white and the black king, Osman and Moro, fight for the love of a maiden. For centuries this battle dance has been performed in Korčula, and it has become world-famous. Moreška used to be played in many towns on the Mediterranean, and today only in Korčula. Although it is not of native origin, the game took root in Korčula and became one of the symbols of this place. The recognisable trades of the people of Korčula are wooden shipbuilding and stonemasonry.

Today Korčula bases its development on its natural and historical values. The locals strive to make the most of the development opportunities available to them, primarily in tourism, trade and shipbuilding.

Across the whole island guests are offered Robinson houses, that is, houses in seclusion. This is a special offer typical of the more remote islands in the Adriatic. Robinson houses are especially interesting to people who love solitude and nature. They are mostly located in beautiful coves hidden in nature.

Tourism began to stand out more at the end of the 19th century. The first public bathing place in the town was laid out as far back as 1904. The first brochure of this place was printed in Vienna in 1914, in several languages. Yet only 15 years after the end of the Second World War did modern tourism begin to develop on the island. Those years were the forerunner of the tourism we know today. Hotels, campsites and all possible accompanying tourist facilities began to be built on the island. So-called health tourism is especially pronounced, mostly because of the mild climate and clean air. Of course, the cleanliness of the sea goes hand in hand with all this, and health tourism on Korčula is helped most by healing mud, which can be found at several locations on the island.

The island is adorned with a large number of beautiful beaches and coves, luxury hotels and private holiday homes for rent. The view across the island is shaped by olive groves more than 100 years old, and a large number of vineyards.

We take this opportunity to invite you all to visit the island and see the town of Korčula.
