Tourism is a branch of the economy in Pag that is especially cultivated. The whole island is in fact tourism-oriented, but fishing also plays a significant role in the development of Pag.
The first major surge of tourism in Pag came at the beginning of the 1960s. To this day this branch of the economy is cultivated in Pag, which is evident because the town is a well-known destination throughout the world. The number of guests grows year after year, and interest in visiting both the town and the island of Pag keeps increasing.

Today Pag has around 10 thousand beds for overnight stays, and during the summer season over 100 thousand guests stay in the town. Most tourists find their place in private apartments and rooms, some choose one of the many campsites, and the rest fill the hotel capacities.

Because of the rapid development of tourism in the 1960s and 1970s, a large number of holiday houses were built on the island. These buildings still host most of the tourists who visit the island and the town itself. If you are looking for private accommodation on Pag, see our offer.

With the development of tourism, the town seized the opportunity and developed other similar branches such as trade and hospitality. Today in Pag you have everything you might need for a pleasant holiday that will stay in the best memories. As tourism developed, the town authorities began to take special care of the beaches and natural assets. As a result, it can be said today that some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are right here on the island of Pag.

Beaches on Pag

Prosika City Beach

If you have visited Pag and decided to stay overnight, it will be convenient for you to go to the Prosika beach. This is the main town beach, particularly suitable for swimming and sunbathing for families with small children. Prosika beach is well equipped and offers rich tourist facilities. We can single out in particular the beach volleyball courts, the tennis courts and the option of renting pedal boats. Many will have fun riding water scooters, and the youngest can enjoy sliding down the water slide.

Pag Island History

As a historically interesting item we will mention the salt pan on this island. Pag is otherwise rich in historical stories, buildings and facts, which you will best see for yourself if you visit. We will use this opportunity to introduce you to the salt pan on the island and to mention the Salt Museum.

Pag salt is known around the world, and it is obtained by evaporating water from shallow basins. The evaporation begins in the first basin, where the concentration of sodium chloride is lowest, and ends in the last one, where the sea water is so supersaturated that the salt settles on the bottom of the basin. This is a long process, starting in spring and ending in autumn, when the salt is collected – the so-called salt harvest.

As salt is a kind of symbol of the island, today Pag has a Salt Museum. It is located in the town itself, in the former salt warehouses. In the museum you can see the tools and devices that were used at the time throughout the production process. Visit Pag and enjoy the sightseeing.

Pag Cheese and Salt

Besides salt production, Pag is known for its Pag cheese. Pag cheese is certainly one of the most famous products of this island. Although islanders make several kinds of cheese, each of them is made from milk obtained exclusively from sheep that graze on the island of Pag. That is what makes the cheese special and prized around the world. Why is that? We should know that the island of Pag is special because it has very little grass, which is very salty due to the salt and salt spray carried by the bora wind. The sheep that graze that grass and aromatic herbs such as immortelle, sage and bušin give the milk a special aroma. Cheese made from such milk also has a special flavour. Gourmets recognise this and gladly eat cheese from Pag.

We hope this text is at least a reasonably good introduction to the town of Pag, so that you will come to visit and enjoy the content mentioned. Book your accommodation, come and surrender to the summer atmosphere.
