Rural Ensemble of Tomaši, Brela

Tomaši is a hamlet behind Biokovo, in the Zabiokovo part of Brela, in Split-Dalmatia County. It is interesting to a visitor because it shows the traditional combination of dwelling and work: houses on one side, a fertile valley on the other.

The hamlet lies on the western slope of the valley between the hills of Stupica and Veter. The houses arose on the eastern side, and the field extends to the west, so they form a single whole of life and tilling of the land. The residential houses are two-storey buildings whose rear part is dug into the terrain, covered with a gabled wooden roof with tiles. The farm buildings are ground-floor structures, mostly dry-stone, of larger pieces of rock. Their steeper gabled roofs were originally covered with rye straw, and this tradition has survived to the present day on only one pojata. The ensemble dates from the 18th to the 20th century.

The hamlet is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-3009.
