Ancient Shipwreck, Šibenik

Northwest of the Koromačna cove near Šibenik, in Šibenik-Knin County, an ancient shipwreck with a cargo of amphorae lies on the seabed. It is accessible only to divers, and is interesting as one of the best-preserved underwater sites of its kind.

The wreck rests on a rocky, sloping bottom at a depth of 38 to 44 metres. The amphorae are packed together over an area of 17 by 8 metres, and about 300 were counted during documentation. Especially valuable are rare types: Dressel 43 amphorae with horn-shaped handles, originating from Crete, and amphorae of the Riley ER1 type with parallels in Pompeii. The site has been fully documented and then protected with a protective net.

The shipwreck is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-53.
