Šibenik is a town on the Adriatic coast, the seat of Šibenik-Knin County, and a good example of medieval urbanism on the Adriatic. A visitor experiences it as a cascade of houses, churches and palaces descending towards the sea.
Over the bay dominates the Fortress of St Michael, and the urban fabric pours down the slope to the sea. The urban concept developed over centuries, so the greatest value is its layering: on the facades one can literally read the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque, as well as the interventions of the 19th and 20th centuries. The town has a large number of palaces and churches. The most important monument is the Gothic-Renaissance Cathedral of St James, also inscribed on the UNESCO list, on the main square. The town was once surrounded by ramparts and towers, but only a small part has been preserved.
The ensemble is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4298.
