In the southwestern part of Dubrovnik's historic core, right beside the city wall, lie the remains of the former Monastery of St Andrew. Unlike Dubrovnik's better-known sights, this is an archaeological site that shows a less visible layer of the city and the life of its monks. It belongs to Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
The monastery is mentioned in archival documents in the 13th century. It has long been assumed that the monastery church stood on the highest terrace, right by the wall. On the lower terrace, in the northeastern part, one can make out the division of land of the former double residential row, and between the two rows ran a klončina, that is, a drainage channel. Archaeological investigations uncovered 19 grain pits. Directly beside the monastery, also by the city wall, stood the Church of St Martin.
The site is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RST-1254-1986.
Data: Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (Ministry of Culture and Media), Open Licence; coordinates: DGU (centre of the settlement).
