The remains of the Church of St Stephen lie in Pustjerna, in the eastern part of Dubrovnik's historic core, not far from the southern city walls. For a visitor to Dubrovnik it is an opportunity to see the trace of one of the oldest known sanctuaries of the medieval city.
The church was already mentioned in 949 by the Byzantine emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus in his work "De administrando imperio", which gives it special weight in the history of the city. Over the centuries it was extended and enlarged, so the present plan bears the features of the Romanesque with later Gothic additions. Stone fragments of early Christian and Romanesque origin were found in the ruin. Because of its historical significance and design it is counted among the most important monuments of early medieval architecture within Dubrovnik. The period of construction and alterations extends from the 9th to the 17th century.
The remains are a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-7286.
