In a dominant position on Dubrovnik's Gorica, facing the sea, stands the church of St Blaise. For a visitor it is the first church dedicated to the city's patron saint that was built outside the city walls.
According to a deed of gift, it already existed in 1255. Beside it was a convent for female hermits. It was thoroughly renovated and rebuilt on the remains of the older church in 1857. It is large, oriented from east to west, with a rectangular ground plan and a semicircular apse. The façade has an entrance and a rosette, and ends in a bell gable. The votive church stands on a geological fault, which is why it was rebuilt and repaired in the 19th century, with interventions in the 20th century too. It was archaeologically investigated and restored in 2010.
The church is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-926. It is located in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, and the period from the 13th to the 19th century is mentioned.
