On the Gradina hillock above the harbor in Trpanj, on the Pelješac peninsula (Dubrovnik-Neretva County), the remains of a larger fortification from the period from the 5th to the 6th century can be seen. For visitors it is interesting as part of the defensive chain of the Pelješac coast.
The fortress occupies about 1800 m2, and according to building technique and movable finds belongs to late antiquity. The walls follow the shape of the terrain, and two rectangular towers project from the eastern wall. The interior was divided into several rooms of different sizes, of which the cistern is most clearly visible. The fortress should be viewed within the framework of a series of strategic settlements on the northern Pelješac coast that relied on Narona and controlled traffic through the Neretva Channel.
