On the islet of Galevac, opposite the village of Preko on the island of Ugljan in Zadar County, stands the Monastery of St Paul. It attracts visitors for its peaceful position in the middle of the sea and for the rich cultural and spiritual heritage it preserves.
According to tradition, the monastery was founded in the 14th century by followers of St Paul. In the 15th and 16th centuries the buildings were extended, and the new Church of St Paul, consecrated in 1596, was built at that time. The church is single-nave, with a square apse. Beside it are the monastery buildings, which enclose a small cloister, and to the north extends a cemetery. Franciscans still live in the monastery today. Through history it was an important centre of Glagolitic culture, as the rich library and church collection attest.
The monastery is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-1565.
Data: Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (Ministry of Culture and Media), Open Licence; coordinates: DGU (centre of the settlement).
