Sukošan, in Zadar County, has kept its old core on a small peninsula, which makes it a pleasant destination for walking and sightseeing. The historic settlement is interesting for its dense cluster of stone houses that in the past also served as protection against attack.
In the middle of the core stands the Church of St Cassian, mentioned in the 13th century. When the Turkish incursions began, the village was fortified, and the houses with their outer facades formed an unbroken rampart. The ground plan of the core is irregularly quadrangular, and the buildings are of stone, one- and two-storey. On the north side is the entrance to the village, the Gornja vrata square, where the house of the landowning Palac family also stands. In front of the core, on an islet in the cove, the remains of the 15th-century summer residence of Bishop Valaresso can be seen.
The ensemble is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-3082.
