Ancient Harbour Installations, Sukošan

In Barbir Cove, between Cape Plitkovača and Kažela near Sukošan in Zadar County, at a depth of one to three and a half metres lie the remains of an ancient landing place. It is an interesting destination for divers and lovers of underwater archaeology, and it belonged to a Roman rustic villa whose walls are preserved not far from the shore.

The harbour complex consists of two parts. The eastern structure served as the main jetty, and the western one had the role of a breakwater protecting the ships. The foundations were built of large stone blocks, and besides the architectural remains there are also many pottery fragments. The structures were fully functional in the late antique period, and the site is dated from the 1st to the 5th century.

The remains are a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-29.
