The City Park – known today as Queen Jelena's Park – was created back in the era of Romanticism. With it, Zadar gained its first public City Park. In that period Zadar was a fortress-city, and in the evening hours the city walls could not be left. That is why, for a full forty years, this park was a kind of city balcony, from where a beautiful view opened onto the sea and surroundings, and where organised events were held amid the scents of Mediterranean flora.
The park was opened on 16 September 1829, and credit for its construction and design goes to the city's then military governor, Baron Franz Ludwig von Welden. He was, incidentally, a passionate botanist who, enchanted by the Dalmatian flora, designed and had the park built.
He gave it the name City Park and handed it over for the enjoyment and care of the citizens. At that time, only he could have built it, especially in that location – the park was raised on the largest bastion of the Zadar fortress, since these were military facilities.
As we have already mentioned, Zadar got its first public park while it was still a fortress-city. It was created in the era of Romanticism, when there was widespread interest in foreign cultures and civilisations, as well as in plants from distant lands. The baron was a Bavarian, so to him Dalmatia was still an exotic and highly interesting land. Its flora was unexplored, and he himself discovered several new species.
He collaborated with many other botanists and published his research in various German journals.
Today the park is very well visited, and both the citizens of Zadar and the large number of guests who come to visit the city enjoy it. It is a beautiful place for pleasant walks, resting on benches, or enjoying the view of the flora and fauna of this region.
In Queen Jelena's Park you will find Ledana Lounge & Bar, which is open all year round and is especially lively in summer, when various concerts are held there. You can find event announcements at ledana.hr
