Church of St Andrew and St Peter the Old, Zadar

In Zadar, in Zadar County, stands the two-part complex of the Church of St Andrew and St Peter the Old, from the period between the 5th and 9th centuries. It is interesting because in a small space it unites two phases of early church building.

The front space is older and was built in the 5th or 6th century as an early Christian oratory; the rear part arose in the 9th century. The Church of St Andrew is a simple rectangular building with a semicircular apse and half-dome, and through it one enters the Church of St Peter the Old. This has two aisles, with two inscribed apses and a vaulted nave divided into four bays. Several Roman fragments are built into the walls, and the walls carry remains of frescoes.

A protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-739.
