Pula Arena is the largest monument of ancient construction in Croatia, the sixth largest amphitheatre in the world, and one of the best-preserved of its kind in the world. It was built in the first century, presumably at the request of Emperor Augustus, and construction was continued by Emperor Vespasian, who was also responsible for building the Roman Colosseum. Its purpose was gladiatorial combat. The arena covers an area of 11500 square metres, roughly the size of a football pitch, and can hold over 25 000 spectators. Unfortunately, a large part of the stone was taken away between the fifth and seventh centuries after the arena lost its function, and many people used the stone from the arena for their own private purposes.
