Starigrad Fortress, also called Fortica, rises on the top of the Omiška Dinara above the town of Omiš in Split-Dalmatia County. It was built to protect the town, and today it is a destination for visitors drawn by military architecture and a view from on high.
It is first mentioned in Venetian sources in 1443 under the name Starigrad. The entrance is protected by triangular bastions of massive stone blocks, built in 1571. The southern side with its crenellation stretches towards the main square tower in the west, which is late Gothic, vaulted with a tufa vault and has a terrace at the top. In the inner courtyard, remains of garrison buildings, cisterns and smaller chapels are preserved. The fortress is a prominent monument of military architecture from the end of the 14th century, to which bastions were added in the second half of the 16th century.
The fortress is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5012. It belongs to the secular architectural heritage.
