Omiš is located at the mouth of the Cetina beneath the cliffs of the Omiš Dinara, in Split-Dalmatia County. For visitors it is interesting because the rocks and the river shaped it as a town of strategic position, with towers, walls and narrow streets.
It is first mentioned in 1074. In the 13th century the medieval town beneath the cliff was surrounded with walls and fortified with the Peovica tower. The suburb of Smokvica with the Poljica Square and the church of the Holy Spirit was in the 16th century protected by walls on the east, south and west. The town is also helped by the Starigrad fortress from the 15th century on the crags outside the town. In the 19th century Omiš outgrew the town walls, and by filling in the moat a new street arose. The historic core is marked by buildings of Renaissance and Baroque expression, while in the oldest part, Smokvica, houses of rural appearance have been preserved.
The ensemble is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4066.
