Palagruža is a group of islets in the middle of the Adriatic, part of the town of Komiža in Split-Dalmatia County. It consists of Vela and Mala Palagruža and smaller islands and reefs, and it is interesting because people have left traces here for millennia.
On Vela Palagruža stands a lighthouse from the end of the 19th century. At the sites Jonkova njiva and Pod vartle remains from the Neolithic and Bronze Age were found: a multitude of flint tools, numerous pieces of finely painted Greek tableware from the 6th to the 2nd century BC, as well as Roman tableware. On the central plateau called Salamandrija a high density of finds was uncovered, including late antique walls beneath the church of St. Michael, which was damaged in the First World War. Palagruža is an exceptionally rich archaeological site.
The archipelago is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5937.
