The cathedral of St. Vitus in Rijeka, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, is a Baroque church in the Old Town. For visitors it is interesting for its round central space under a dome and for having been built as a Jesuit church.
At the beginning of the 17th century the Jesuits decided to build a church on the site of a Romanesque chapel of the same name. The construction was paid for by a donation from Countess Ursula von Thanhausen, to a design by Giacomo Briani, who also designed the Jesuit church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Trieste. The foundation stone was laid on 15 June 1638, and construction was completed in 1744. The building has a central floor plan, and the dome rests on six strong piers connected by semicircular arches. North of the central space is the sanctuary, and above it a tambour with galleries.
