Mali Lošinj is a town in a deep bay in the southern part of the island of Lošinj, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. For visitors it is interesting as a place that grew from a shepherds' village into a maritime town with captains' houses.
Originally it was the rural settlement of Malo selo around the church of St. Martin in the 15th century. The church was built between 1450 and 1490, but was later rebuilt several times, so today it looks like a monumental Baroque building. The inhabitants at first engaged in livestock farming and agriculture, and with the development of seafaring the settlement descended toward the sheltered bay. In the 15th century a defensive tower was built, a refuge from pirate attacks. The sudden rise of the maritime economy and shipbuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries turned the village into a small town, and the result is Baroque captains' houses.
The ensemble is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-6994.
