The church of St. Barbara is located in Trogir, south of the main town square, in Split-Dalmatia County. The old core is a pleasure to stroll, and this small church is especially attractive because of its built-in ancient parts and an old inscription.
It is a basilica from the pre-Romanesque period, built in the 9th century. The square apse faces east and is covered with stone slabs. The west facade is divided by shallow pilasters, and partly hidden by a two-storey passage, a shod, supported by a column from antiquity. The main entrance with a lunette is formed from pieces of an ancient sarcophagus, on which early Christian crosses are carved, while the lintel is decorated with interlace motifs. Beneath them runs an inscription saying that around the year 1000 the church was built by the prior Maius and his relative Petar. It was originally dedicated to St. Martin, and the veneration of St. Barbara moved in when her church on the mainland was destroyed.
The church is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-1867.
