The Grobišće necropolis is located at the foot of the town of Grobnik, in the municipality of Čavle, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It is of interest to visitors as a cemetery in which people were buried over more than a thousand years, beside the only approach to the town.
The zone extends over a flattened podium. Research so far has shown that the deceased were laid out stretched, which is a feature of the Japodian, Colapian and Notranjska cultural groups. Burials took place from the Iron Age and antiquity right up to the Middle Ages. The stratigraphy is horizontal, which clearly shows that graves with new cultural features sprang up beside older ones. Anthropological research has confirmed that there were no major changes in the composition of the population. The oldest graves belong to the period from the 7th to the 5th century BC.
The zone is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2935.
Data: Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (Ministry of Culture and Media), Open Licence; coordinates: DGU (centre of the settlement).
