Cultural and Historical Ensemble of the Settlement of Vrbnik

Vrbnik, on the northeastern coast of the island of Krk in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, is situated on a height above the sea, opposite the Vrbnik field. It is a well-known island place whose narrow street network and stone houses attract visitors who like walking through old cores.

The medieval settlement developed on a prehistoric hillfort. At the edge of the field lie the ruins of the Gradec fortress, which tradition holds to be the original seat of the Frankopans. Vrbnik is first mentioned in 1100 as one of the more important Frankopan castles. Within the former ramparts the lanes gather around two focal points, the church square and the people's square, and the historic buildings have Gothic and Renaissance features. On the main square stand the parish Church of St Mary from the 15th and 16th centuries, the town loggia and the Duke's Court, while the people's square is by the town gate, where the confraternity house of St John once stood.

The ensemble is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2698.
