Beneath the sea near Biograd na Moru, in Zadar County, lie the remains of Roman harbour embankments. They are a destination for divers and for those interested in what an ancient harbour on the eastern Adriatic coast looked like.
At a depth of 1.5 to 3 metres Roman walls continue from the shore into the sea as jetties. The eastern embankment of rubble stone ends in a pointed head, and around it gather fragments of roof tiles, amphorae and large storage vessels. The western jetty is made in the shape of the letter L, of huge stone blocks filled with rubble. It extends 160 metres into the sea, then turns at a right angle and continues for a further 45 metres. The seabed is strewn with ballast stones from ships and pieces of ancient tableware. The site belongs to the period from the 1st to the 4th century.
The remains are a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-28.
