Biograd na Moru, in Zadar County, sits on a natural peninsula resembling a tongue. Visitors walk here through a town that in the early Middle Ages was one of the political centres of the Croatian state, and today is above all a seaside resort.
On the north side extends the wide Bošana cove, in which the remains of an ancient harbour and a rustic villa can be seen. As an urban centre Biograd is mentioned in the 10th century, as the seat of the Croatian rulers, and in the 11th century it was an important town of the early Croatian state. The Venetians destroyed it, leaving only a smaller varoš (suburb), which during the Turkish incursions was fortified and became the seat of a captaincy of the surrounding settlements. The houses on the peninsula are mostly rural in character, one- and two-storey, with stone or plastered facades, while those by the shore look more urban. At the beginning of the 20th century town houses with historicist plaster decoration arose in Varoš.
The ensemble is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4244.
Data: Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (Ministry of Culture and Media), Open Licence; coordinates: DGU (centre of the settlement).
