Rijeka, the largest Croatian port on the Kvarner and the centre of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, is a city with a layered past. A visitor walking through the old core discovers traces of three millennia, from prehistory to more recent times.
The beginnings of urban development are to be sought already in prehistory, and in antiquity Tarsatica arose on the area of today's Old Town. Its streets, cardo and decumanus, forum and walls later served as the foundation for the medieval town. That town lasted until the second half of the 17th century, when a new part, Civitas Nova, was built in front of the southern walls. In the second half of the 19th century Rijeka experienced a building boom and was connected by transport links with the rest of Europe and the world. After 1918 the Italian administration also left its mark on the appearance of the city. Neighbouring Sušak developed in parallel.
